We learned a couple is building a “non load” baring Strawbale home up in Sparrowbush area. This project actually started on August 3rd 2022. Not as the post says June.
What is a strawbale home?? It is a home built out of bales of straw, (load baring), or insulated with bales of straw, (non load baring), from farmers fields- like the big square kind of strawbales. The thickness of the straw gives the walls a whopping 60-70 insulation rating! Average regular new home walls only have a 24 insolation rating as comparison.
So what is so great about using strawbales?
-Well, like we said, great insulation!
-Sound proofing from noise outside
-Eco Friendly- as straw is sustainable & renewable
-Cost effective- not as expensive as drywall
-Healthier- less toxins then conventional building materials
-Easily sourced compared to many products now days that are hard to get or costly
-Fire resistant- Yes! the bales are so dense it is very hard to catch on fire.
-Strong- No huffing n puffing will blow this house down!
And the list goes on and on, but those are a few great reasons. Especially since a lot of straw comes right from Upstate NY.
This will be a home that will be framed like a regular house using straw as the insulation part but most everything else will be conventional. The interior edge walls will plastered straw and not dry wall so it will have a unique inside look.
Right now the foundation is being prepped for this project by Primo Concrete. Equity Homes did the excavating & septic, and Santiago from Five Star Windows & Doors will do the framing, roofing, and siding. Tony Caniglia from Colorado will be doing the strawbale stacking & plastering.

Straw bales construction is fascinating. I wonder if it's hard to get permits to do it?
