How to Keep Deer Out!!

Updated: Oct 7, 2023

I live in an area with many little cabins on top of each other, and yet in the area we also have lots of fields and forests. The first few years we lived here the few deer we had mostly left our flowers and gardens alone. Then a neighbor thought it would be "cool" to feed them....NOT! Now the deer are here to stay and the rest of us in the neighborhood are trying to deal with the situation the best we can. We found out that certain things work to help keep the deer out, and other things not really . Here is a list of what we discovered that can help keep the Deer Out!:

1) Deer Repellent:

The first year that the deer were really bad we heard there was a deer repellent you could get at Tractor & Supply. I picked up a large gallon container and went to town! Surprisingly it did work, but not all the time, and not for long...you see if it rains, or you forget to be diligent, then the deer come back- and with a vengeance! It is very disappointing to think your covered and then find your blueberry bushes are munched to the ground. Alas what to do?

2) A Very Tall Fence:

We thought about a big tall fence, but that option was not so great for us. You see we live by a very scenic river, with a main road in front of the house. A big tall fence would be an eye sore for us and everyone else. If you can afford a big tall fence, then your fence needs to be a minimum of 6 feet high, or higher. Also if you can do two layers of fencing that are spaced 3 ft apart. This fencing method, I heard, is the best way to stop the deer, because the width of the fence will intimidate the deer from jumping over.

3) Electric Fence:

We did buy and electric fence late last year from Tractor & Supply, but our garden was already tucked away, and we did not have time to put it up. Our other friends use this type of electric fencing and it does work well. It can pack a punch that will for sure keep the deer's out! But this option also has it's draw backs. If you have kids, dogs, chickens or other pets, then they may get "zapped" as well! Plus it may not cover bigger areas without large costs, and affordability may be limited to a garden spot. We may still put up our electric fence, but we think we found the ultimate solution to keep the deer out...

4) Water Jet Sprayers:

Searching hard online for some other products to stop the deer invasion (after they ate all my tulips!) I ran across these deer water sprayers. Here's how they work. They are small devices with a sensor in the front. You connect the sprayer to your garden hose and then test the sensor without water first. If it makes a "click, click" sound your golden. Then you place it in the area you want to protect. Turn on the water and stand behind it. Then run your hand past the sensor and watch the water jet fly! See if it covers the area you want and that is it! They are easy to adjust.

The first night I used my jets I heard some commotion outside. The next day I noticed my old chicken wire garden fence laying on the ground near the sensor with scrambling deer tracks everywhere. Ah Ha! With a large smile on my face I could picture the deer sneaking up to my flower beds and then Wham-O! They were hit with a powerful water jet! They ran so fast they ran over two rows of fences! Gee I wish I could have seen that! Needless to say I quickly bough another one. I turn it off during the day to save the batteries, and then turn it on at night for the deer. The deer sprayers will also keep away feral cats, ground hogs and other creatures you don't want in your yard. No bad smells, no zapping and very effective- plus some can be used to water your lawn as well-Love it!

Find the Deer Jet Sprayers on Amazon. The one I bought is called, "The Hoont Cobra Deer Repellent Sprayer."
